The Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences joined the 18th Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences online during May 21 and 22, 2022. The theme of this year’s event was "Love Science and Look to the Future." The event was co-organized by the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation and the Hubei Youth Science and Technology Center.
The live event kicked off with a speech from HU Wei, deputy director of IHB. The online audience was taken to the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences where they could view China's largest freshwater fish collection, see the largest freshwater algae collection, interact with the smiling angel Yangtze finless porpoise, and learn about the state-of-the-art scientific instruments of life sciences in the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology and the Analysis and Testing Center.
Additionally, the audience explored Prof. Tong Jinguo's laboratory to discover the charm of a new aquatic species. With its large head and fewer thorns, the bighead carp captured the hearts of foodies and radiated excitement in the broadcast room. It is even more delicious when made into steamed fish heads with chopped bell peppers.
This live event promoted the scientific spirit of IHB's older generation, created a scientific atmosphere, stimulated public interest in science, and infused more scientific thinking and fun into the community.
Public Science Day has become an important platform for promoting science and spreading scientific knowledge as a branded activity of CAS. It provides the public with an opportunity to understand the progress of science and technology. Since 2004, it has been held every May.
