Prof. DONG Shuanglin from the Ocean University of China gave an academic lecture titled "The Three Difficulties and Solutions in the Development of Aquaculture" at the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on March 29, 2023.
In his lecture, Prof. Dong started with the three difficulties facing the development of aquaculture in China - increasing production, reducing pollution, and saving energy. He systematically introduced the current strategies for solving these problems and focused on the significant progress his team has made in deep-sea aquaculture in recent years.
In addition, Prof. Dong discussed the development and application of deep-sea aquaculture equipment types and species, the technical principles of economic and livelihood-oriented deep-sea aquaculture models, and the construction of the Aquaculture Town in East China Sea.
Prof. Dong pointed out that expanding deep-sea aquaculture is one of the effective ways to solve the three dilemmas and proposed a two-step strategy for China's aquaculture industry to achieve carbon neutrality.
Prof. Dong is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and a leading talent in “Taishan Scholars” Program. His research focuses on aquaculture ecology, including optimal environment conditions for individual growth and response to environment factor variation of cultural organisms, the principle and techniques of water quality management, the structure and function of aquaculture ecosystems, the interaction between aquaculture and environment, and economic ecology in aquaculture.
